I've just entered the contracting market as a web developer and I've having a tough time figuring out how to plan for the future.
Several developers I've worked with in the past have told me to become a specialist in one technology/area in order to secure the big contracts. However I've also heard from other sources that it's better to spread your expertise so that you're not limited in the types of work you can go for.
Personally I've pretty much been involved in both back and front-end technologies during the course of my career, with slight variations in the weighting of each depending on the job. I don't really have a favourite - I enjoy it all.
My question is mainly to the experienced contractors though: Do you feel specialising has helped your career or is it better to know a bit of everything?
Thanks
